America’s HEALTHIEST Campus
Wellness is an important part of every day life for the President and First Lady. When Ann Hargis arrived on campus, she was delighted to learn of the vision of OSU benefactor, Bud Seretean, to become America’s HEALTHIEST Campus ®. The vision is one that was immediately embraced by both the President and First Lady, and the dream has continued to be kept at the forefront of campus life. In 2014, that vision became reality when OSU trademarked the America’s HEALTHIEST Campus® claim.
Wellness programming has consistently increased under the direction of President Hargis. In 2008, through a student-led initiative, OSU became a tobacco free campus. While programming in wellness has traditionally focused on physical activity and nutrition, the university has recently expanded services in the area of emotional health. The university has hired the nation’s first dedicated, system-wide Chief Wellness Officer. In addition, the OSU Pet Therapy Program has been created to provide emotional health benefits to employees, students, and visitors.
With the support of the President, there is an increased effort to work diligently to create more cohesiveness within the university system in the area of wellness. Recognizing the importance of a holistic approach, the First Cowgirl is actively engaged in the wellness efforts at the university and is sensitive to the needs of such a diverse population. It is important to both the President and First Lady that a culture of health and wellness be cultivated for all populations, and that the tools are available for all to live a healthy and happy life. This effort extends beyond the OSU-Stillwater border and reaches not only system-wide, but also through the county extensions.
As First Cowgirl, Ann Hargis continues to applaud the efforts of the University in the area of wellness and invites all to celebrate America’s HEALTHIEST Campus®.
